How to Fix a Woodpecker Hole Like a Pro… Or at Least Try 😅
Hey everyone, it’s Nelson here from Quick Sidekick in beautiful Vancouver, Canada 🇨🇦. Got called out for a lil’ job today, you know, just your regular ol’ bird makin’ themselves at home where they def shouldn’t. Yep, a woodpecker decided the side of this house, right where the fascia is, was the perfect spot for a new condo. Not today, buddy!
🛠️ What I Used (Yup, Ran to RONA and Home Depot—Twice 🤦♂️)

Aluminum sheet (bought from Home Depot, ain’t cheap but does the job)

Insulation Foam (you need to fill that hole so no critters move in)

Sandpaper 60 Grit (got this from RONA, smoothin’ it all out)

Exterior Caulking
-
Screws (can’t just pray it stays up, right?)

Good ol’ ladder and some patience… a lot of patience!
📋 How I Fixed It Up (Step-by-Step – Kinda, I Did Forget My Coffee)
- Find the Hole… and the Culprit 🐦
First thing, spotted the lil’ guy still there! Took a pic before he flew off thinkin’ he paid rent or sumthin.
2 . Foam Fillin’ Time
Grabbed that expansion foam and filled the hole good. You gotta let it sit a bit. Don’t be impatient like me… I touched it too soon and got it all over my hands. Pro tip: Don’t do that.
3 . Trim the Foam
After it dried, I cut off the extra foam so it’s flush with the fascia. If you leave it bumpy, the patch looks like a bad haircut. 🧼✂️
4 . Throw Up That Metal Patch
Screwed in that aluminum sheet right over the hole. Make sure it’s tight and snug. Used my drill and some elbow grease. Looks kinda shiny but hey, better than a hole!
5 . Sand it Down
Used that 60 grit sandpaper to smooth around the edges. If it’s rough, paint won’t stick nice.
6 . Caulking Like a Boss (Kinda)
Put exterior caulking around the patch so water don’t sneak in. My line wasn’t perfect, but it’ll hold! Mighta made a bit of a mess but nothing a lil’ wipe can’t fix.
7 . Paint to Match (If You Got the Paint)
Client said they’ll paint it later, so left it shiny silver for now. Looks like a lil’ shield. Told ‘em it’s now woodpecker proofed AND futuristic! 😂
